A private, supportive meeting to understand your options.

You may have been advised to attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) by a solicitor, the court or another professional, or you simply wish to explore whether family mediation can help you.

A MIAM is a private, individual meeting with a family mediator. It provides an opportunity to discuss your circumstances, understand how mediation works and consider the options available to you.

The meeting is confidential, subject to limited exceptions, and there is no obligation to proceed with mediation. The other party does not attend your MIAM.

Your First Step: Understanding MIAMs

What happens at a MIAM?

Your MIAM will typically include the following:

A Private Conversation

Your mediator will listen to your circumstances and what has brought you to mediation. They will explain the process and answer any questions you may have.

Understanding your options

Your mediator will help you explore whether mediation is suitable for your circumstances, explain the different ways it can take place and discuss other options that may be relevant to you.

After your MIAM.

Following your MIAM you can decide whether you wish to proceed with mediation. Your mediator will explain the next steps and, where appropriate, provide information and other options or the relevant court documents
